Katamama
Uniform Design for Katamama Suites at Desa Potato Head, Seminyak, Bali
Katamama was built from materials drawn from Mother Earth, using ancient craftsmanship. Over 1.8 million terracotta bricks were hand-crafted by artisans in the village of Darmasaba to form the building’s walls. The suites within are bright, spacious and filled with new-and-old treasures from around Indonesia.

These values are portrayed in the uniforms of all the staff throughout the grounds. We created relaxed, modern silhouettes inspired by the shapes of traditional garments from all around the Indonesian archipelago. The shape of the collars for instance, are a take on Javanese royalty Kebaya from the 1920’s.
The materials used in building the hotel became a source of inspiration for the use of textiles: natural textured linens and cottons, illustrations translated from Balinese natural landscape, plant-based indigo dyes and custom made traditional hand woven textiles.
Visiting one village to another, we hand selected the materials that represent Katamama beautifully, both in its values and visuals, in seeking to shine a spotlight on the story of these skilful practitioners and to place Indonesia's traditional handicrafts into a modern context.
All the garments and textiles are handmade by Balinese artisans, and were developed together with the Katamama creative team in 2015.
