Canaan
Uniform Design for Canaan, Bali, Indonesia.
Canaan is a boutique and gallery located in Seminyak, Bali and in Cikajang, Jakarta, producing Indonesian-made crafts, home wares, natural dyed clothing and textiles by ways of collaborating with local artisans. Canaan was previously located in Katamama Hotel, now the boutique and café in Bali is a partnership with Rou Coffee, a beans to cup Tokyo-inspired specialty coffee that serves both Coffee and Matcha. The boutique in Jakarta takes form in Niniveh, a showroom of the Canaan curated products.
They believe in working together with other creatives and have facilitated various engagements in arts, photography and craft-based workshops. Striving to achieve a sustainable and ethical practice, Canaan also curates products made by local brands and artisans carrying the same ethics.

Reflecting on those values, the uniform options explored textured, loosely hand-weaved natural textiles naturally dyed in shades of indigos, off whites and beiges. Designed into oversized top & outerwear, fisherman pants and apron.
The outerwear silhouette is kimono inspired, made reversible with two different textiles to optimize versatility for the staff. It has a side button opening that allows three ways of dressing; closed, half-open and completely open. This is paired with fisherman pants, off white t-shirts and side aprons. The oversized top was provided as an option, featuring overlapping seam details on the side body, and outer seam binding in contrast colours on the shoulder
The final look selected for production was a long sleeve top with band collar, with slits that goes up to the waist on the sides, paired with indigo wide legged trousers. Half of the top sleeves are dip dyed by hand in natural indigo, and finished off with shell buttons opening.
All the fabrics and garments were produced locally in Bali in 2016
